NCRB - Crimes in India Summary: Year, State and Crime Head wise Number of IPC/BNS Crimes Committed, Victims and Crime Rate in India

This dataset provides year wise, state wise and crime head wise statistics on crimes registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in India, including the number of crimes committed, number of victims, and crime rate. It covers major offence groups such as crimes against women and children, offences affecting the human body, offences against property, offences against public tranquillity, economic and document related offences, and other IPC/BNS crimes. Key offences include murder, kidnapping and abduction, rape, assault, dowry deaths, theft, robbery, burglary, dacoity, cheating, forgery, riots, and related offences, providing a comprehensive overview of crime patterns and victimisation in India. Note: The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) from 1 July 2024. Consequently, NCRB collected IPC and BNS crime registration data separately for 2024. The transition introduced new crime heads, revised offence classifications, separate reporting of certain crimes against women and children, organised crime provisions, and changes to existing IPC offences. Some offences were removed, merged, or reclassified under the new legal framework. Users should exercise caution while making comparisons across IPC and BNS years.
